Getting a Master’s degree is an excellent ambition, especially if an advanced degree is preferred for your chosen career. Getting accepted into a graduate program, however, can be a big challenge. After all, applying to these programs is not only a significant expense, but it is exhausting work. If a graduate degree is important for your future, you should stay persistent. There may be some ways to improve your chances of acceptance the next time around.

Even for candidates who were accepted into a great college, getting into a Master’s degree program is quite different from the undergraduate admissions process. After all, while over a quarter of people over age 25 in the United States have a Bachelor’s degree, less than 8 percent have a Master’s degree. This indicates, of course, that graduate degree programs are fewer in number, much more selective, and also significantly more challenging than Bachelor’s programs.

Do not take it personally if you were not accepted the first time around. Instead, get back up and keep trying. It may be useful to you to try and figure out why you were not accepted in the first place. For most people, GRE scores improve with practice, so your second or third exam may yield better results.

You can also try to get more experience in your field by finding employment or an internship. You could even volunteer in an area related to your chosen field. Anything that can make you a more well-rounded applicant is a great investment of your time, so be creative when it comes to ways of making yourself stand out through experiences and achievements.

Finally, ask yourself if you applied to schools that were realistic choices, or whether you applied to programs that were highly selective and competitive. It is not a matter of lowering your standards. Rather, you will want to find a good program that is within your reach. Consider an online degree as a good option that may have a slightly less competitive admissions process.

Whatever you do, don’t beat yourself up because you were not accepted into a Master’s program. Many students are in the same position as you: waiting to try again next year. With persistence, you’ll eventually get into the graduate degree program you deserve. Also, don’t completely block out the option of an online Master’s.
