In order for one to be able to practice dentistry, he must take up a dentistry course first and then finish it. If people tell you that becoming a dentist will only take a year or two, do not believe them. Most courses that qualify you to become a licensed dentist will require many years of studying. If you’re not contented with what you know and wish that you could learn even more, you should enroll in subspecialty courses. If you wish to become a better dentist and have the ability to command a higher salary then you should finish these courses.
Sadly, people assume that dentists are only limited to the visible parts of the mouth which is the teeth and the gums. These people are wrong. Just so you know, the gums and the teeth are not the only areas a dentist will cover. According to recent studies, many diseases and cancers have been linked to the improper care of the jaw and the teeth. The recognition that dentists get today are way higher compared to the recognition they get in the past decade. This is due to the recent studies which has linked cancers to poor dental health.
Nobody can simply jump in and take a dentistry course because certain requirements are required for each aspiring student. Finishing a four-year course that somewhat relates to dentistry is the first requirement. However, only a few courses are considered to meet the standards of dental colleges. An example of this is a course called premed.
These courses must have subjects that are related to the dentistry course. Examples of these subjects are chemistry and biology. Some of the subjects that a college requires are the same subjects a different college requires. Other colleges however ask for different subjects. Although, you have to look at the subject specification along with the subject name in order for it to qualify.
Even if these requirements are met, there is still an entrance examination that the student must take which will test if the student can handle the courses in the dental college. This test is widely known as the Dental Admission Test. After the completion of this test, the results will be given to the premed college which the student has graduated from and this test will also be given to the dental college of the student’s choosing.
What Happens After Graduation
The National Board Dental Examination is the examination that a graduate has to take to become a licensed dentist. This exam will evaluate the graduates if they are now ready to start practicing as a licensed dentist. Although, graduates can wait out a year or two before taking this exam. There are those who prefer to take this examination in a few years done the road instead of taking it immediately.
